The way i learned German was just talking and trying to combine words to meaningful (mostly) sentences. I owe all of that to the patience people had in listening to me. So basically that's it. Similar interests is always a plus.

Not just being able to communicate with confidence (alcohol always helps with that) but also learn the local "slangs", the traditional meet and great is always better than a mere hello
