Introducing Tandem DeutschConnect: Language learning for integration, financed by the EU

We’re thrilled to introduce Tandem DeutschConnect, an initiative designed to support third-country nationals living in Germany as they navigate life, language, and integration. Funded by the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund from the European Union, this initiative will enhance the Tandem app with new, accessible features that bring language learning to life beyond the classroom.

Tandem DeutschConnect

Mastering a new language is more than just learning vocabulary and grammar: it’s about confidence, connection, and cultural understanding. While integration and language courses provide a strong foundation, learners often struggle to find meaningful ways to practice outside of these formal settings.

Tandem DeutschConnect fills that gap. With just a smartphone, tens of thousands of third-country nationals will soon be able to practice German in real-world contexts that are guided, supported, and designed specifically for their needs.

The Language Party experience: Speak, listen, belong

At the heart of the initiative is a unique learning format called Language Parties. Language Parties are audio-only conversation spaces in the Tandem app, moderated by qualified German tutors. Participants can join these audio spaces to practice their German in a safe, low-pressure environment.

Each Language Party centers on a specific topic, whether it’s everyday vocabulary like "Family" or integration-focused themes such as “Mobility in Germany.” Up to 15 speakers can join each session to chat about the topic, with no limit to the amount of people listening in from the sidelines. Conversations are structured around interactive activities such as Q&As, discussions, vocabulary games, and real-life scenario role plays.

Unlike traditional courses, Language Parties offer flexible, daily opportunities to speak and listen, skills essential for real integration.

One-on-one language exchange: Connecting third-country nationals and German-speakers

Beyond group interaction, Tandem DeutschConnect also helps third-country nationals connect with German-speaking partners for one-on-one language exchanges. Thanks to Tandem’s large number of active German-speaking members, third-country nationals can easily find friendly, helpful language partners to chat, call, or even meet up in person.

Some language exchanges will be two-way (each person learning a language from the other), while others will be assisted by German-speaking volunteers who simply want to help. These connections won’t just offer language practice, but cultural insights, guidance, and even friendship.

Designed for impact: Inclusive, personalized, free

The Tandem DeutschConnect project is rooted in research and empathy. We’ll interview course participants and instructors to understand which language topics and methods truly support integration. Their input will shape a tailored Language Parties curriculum while also informing the recruitment and training of skilled tutors.

To ensure maximum accessibility, participation is free for third-country nationals living in Germany until mid-2028.

Partnering with language schools and integration course providers

We’ll work hand in hand with language schools and integration course providers across Germany, enabling Tandem DeutschConnect to reach the learners who need it most. Through this partnership, the educators will gain access to a powerful, free tool that extends learning beyond the classroom and supports their students in building confidence through real-world language practice.

Participating schools and course providers will receive information materials, including digital brochures, printed flyers, and posters, to help them introduce the project to their students. We’ll also offer live online demonstrations and ongoing support for teachers, making it simple to incorporate Tandem DeutschConnect into their extracurricular offering.

Tandem DeutschConnect is more than an initiative. It’s a bridge to language, connection, and belonging. Whether you’re a German learner seeking support, a teacher guiding students, or a fluent speaker wanting to help, there’s a place for you in this growing community.
