## What issues do you face when you use Skype for language learning?

It's true that Skype can be a great tool to practice new languages, but there are also some cons to using it for this purpose. Be careful of the following!

__It’s extremely hard to find a conversation exchange partner on Skype__ - In order to get in touch with someone on Skype, you need their Skype name, email address or phone number. This means you have to connect with them on a different platform first and then switch to Skype. 

__Not every language exchange partner wants to have a video or audio call__ - Having a conversation exchange with a stranger can be a little daunting, especially if you’re used to face-to-face meetings. If you’re not quite ready for a video chat, Skype is no different from any other messaging tool out there. 

__It's missing language learning features__ - Granted, Skype does have both text and voice translation features, but these are limited to certain languages. Other than that, Skype lacks features specifically designed to help its users learn languages.

## Is Skype a safe place for language exchange?

As with every communication and messaging tool, you should keep the rules of internet safety in mind when having a Skype language exchange. Skype is a safe place for language exchange, you just need to be mindful that not everyone is who they say they are. 

If you are contacted by someone acting suspiciously, you can easily block them on Skype. Once you block them, you are also asked if you want to report the blocked user to Skype.

Skype Language Exchange: Pros and Cons

Since many of our members are about to embark on a work or study abroad program, we want to give you some practical advice from those who have already experienced it and give you an overview of some global study abroad trends. Studying or working abroad is a valuable experience that will not only benefit you in your professional career but also in your personal life. Here’s how to make the most of your work or study abroad program!

Because experiencing foreign cultures, making new friends, and having an unforgettable adventure is guaranteed almost anywhere you study abroad, the deciding factor for many students is actually the local language. After all, one of the best ways to learn a foreign language is to practice it with native speakers!

A recent survey conducted by [educations.com](https://www.educations.com/) has revealed that as many as 31% of students said that [learning a new language was a top priority](https://www.educations.com/read-student-trends-2019-15494) for students when deciding to study abroad. They surveyed over 32,000 students from 192 nationalities looking for the perfect university or study abroad destination. Of those who cited language learning as a top reason for studying abroad, almost a fifth are specifically going abroad to take a language course.

While academic expenses and living costs are still the number one consideration for students, the next most important factor is the language: 41% of prospective students chose the country by language.

So where do prospective undergraduate students dream of studying abroad? The USA came in top position with the United Kingdom and Canada following in second and third place respectively. Sweden, China, and Switzerland were the least cited answers by students, coming in eighth, ninth and tenth place respectively. Other popular study abroad destinations include Australia, Germany, France, and the Netherlands.

Based on the survey data, it can be supposed that many of these countries are appealing to students who want to learn the local language. While learning a language abroad is a primary reason students choose to study abroad, 37% of the surveyed students reported that not speaking the local language is a concern when deciding to study abroad. For this reason, it’s always a good idea to practice the new language at home before flexing your vocabulary abroad.

1. Prepare in advance

The most important things to prepare in advance include getting any paperwork filled out, such as a work permit or student visa, setting up health insurance, budget planning, accommodation arrangements and packing appropriately for the weather. Mehr shares, however, more exciting things to plan; “particularly for shorter exchange programs, you want to make the most of the experience. Take some time to research the best places to visit and what events are taking place while you are there.” 

2. Immerse yourself in the local culture

Study abroad or [internship programs](https://www.tandem.net/find-internship-abroad) are the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture. They are also a chance to learn a new language - Tandem’s favorite activity! Another way to immerse yourself in the culture is to make an effort to befriend locals. Expanding your social circle to have at least one local friend will give you a new perspective and a better understanding of your adopted culture.

3. Travel travel travel!

One of Mehr’s biggest highlights has been traveling to different places in her free time. “I love exploring new cities and took advantage of living Berlin – the heart of Europe! Over the three months, I managed to visit Prague, Budapest, Paris, and Krakow.” Traveling is an important aspect of studying or working abroad because you get to see places that you wouldn’t ordinarily visit. If traveling solo, it helps build confidence and character, and if traveling with friends, you build stronger friendships and bonds. Either way, you make some awesome memories!

4. Keep an open mind

Tandem's advice is to be open to meeting new people, having new experiences and learning new things. It’s important to say yes to as many new experiences as you can because it will get you out of your comfort zone and improve your confidence. Hearing other people's stories and experiences will also help you build tolerance and understanding. With these new skills in your pocket, you will come home with an enhanced skill-set that you might not have ever imagined.

5. Don’t forget to work hard

Our last piece of advice is to not lose sight of why you are abroad in the first place. There might be times when you don't want to study at all, the workload is too much to handle or you feel a bit homesick – all of which are completely normal – but it’s important to keep focused and to really take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity abroad. Utilize all the resources you have such as your university’s international office, career service or societies to help make the transition easier.

Every culture is unique, and experiencing a new culture is one of the most rewarding aspects of a work or study abroad program. For most people though, learning new vocabulary isn’t an easy task! Time and time again, we hear that this is one of the biggest struggles when learning a new language. It’s one thing to hear a word in conversation, but it's quite another to confidently use it again elsewhere. And no-one wants to spend hours and hours learning things by rote. It does take a lot of work to learn new words, but it doesn’t have to be boring! 

An important first step to take is to find out what kind of learner you are. Do you respond best to images, sounds, explanations or movements? You’ll find this out by trying a variety of different techniques. To help you, we’ve pooled some of the most popular and interesting vocabulary learning methods out there. ## Key Factors

__Interest__

It’s no surprise that motivation plays a key role in your ability to recognize and memorize new words and expressions. You need to have a defined interest, passion or motivation about what you are doing. Constantly reminding yourself why you are doing it cultivates an incredible boost in your learning process. Imagining and realizing the immense possibilities of speaking a new language would bring significantly makes the learning process easier and maybe even enjoyable!

__Attention__

Your attention span and level of concentration are key factors in the learning process. Given the nature of the online world and the real fear of being disconnected, one’s attention span can be significantly diminished due to the fast-paced environment. To help you rebalance, we suggest you eliminate any potential distractions and solely focus on the task at hand. You would be surprised at how much concentration level can affect performance.

__Comprehension__

One can only learn what one understands. Learning something off without understanding or comprehension makes the thing learned idle and useless. If a topic, sentence or even word is initially too complicated to understand, break it down into smaller more digestible pieces of information and you will find it a lot easier to recall.

__Association__

We will discuss more specifically about association methods in the next section of this article, but now let’s take a look at what association really means. The process involves linking new information with old information, which is stored in our long-term memory. This follows the natural structure of the brain which makes for a highly effective tool when remembering new words.

## Methods 

__Set Goals__

Unless you are some kind of super-genius, you aren’t going to learn hundreds of new words effectively every day. You also need to factor in time for reviewing previously learnt vocabulary, so be realistic and set achievable goals every day. We’d suggest 10 words a day as a good starting point!

__Start a vocabulary notebook__

For most people, writing down new words and expressions in a logical, structured way is the first step in getting words to stick in your brain. Traditionally this would have been a small notebook - ideally small enough to jot down any inspiration on the go. However, you might find your smartphone easier for recording and sorting words and phrases. Some people even use spreadsheets!

__Use pictures and descriptions__

It can be tempting to write down everything with a direct translation, but it helps you to think in your target language if you avoid going back to your native one. Pictures are a good idea for visual learners as you start to associate the word with an image. Explanations in the target language give you another chance to think through the meaning and practice other vocabulary.

__Use flashcards__

Flashcards are a tried and tested way to quickly review new vocabulary. It’s time-intensive, but worth it for the ease of quick learning. Use lots of pictures (see above) and don’t put too much on one card. You want to be able to glance quickly at it and know exactly what the word refers to! To help you get started, find a [vocabulary list](https://blog.lingodeer.com/chinese-hsk-3-vocabulary-full-list/) with all the words you need to know for an upcoming test. If you want to use flashcards, but don't have so much time to spare, language learning apps such as [Lingodeer](https://www.lingodeer.com/home) have built-in flashcard functions to help you review words and phrases.

__Sort by context__

A list of random words is going to be confusing. Instead, learn by association. If you speak with your Tandem partner about the topic of “food”, make sure you take note of all these words in the same place. Then you will associate them all with the right thing. 

__Use mnemonics__

Mnemonics are patterns that help you remember something by taking the first letters of the words you want to learn and creating a memorable word or phrase with them. They are perfectly suited to helping you learn vocabulary, as it is easier for the human brain to remember things that are relatable to their life. Another useful technique is to find link words, or words that have the same pronunciation in a known language as the target word, and then associate them visually with the target word.

__Start a diary or blog__

A good way to practice using new words is by writing a story around them. Even better, try and learn vocabulary associated with your daily life, so you can start to write a diary or blog in your target language. Get in the habit of writing a few times a week and you will soon notice how quickly your vocabulary expands. 

__And most importantly... use it in your next conversation__

It might seem a little boring, but keep practicing the same vocabulary with different people. Or even tell your Tandem partner that you want to keep trying on the same topic! You’ll notice you will remember a bit more every time! It can be a bit frustrating at first when you’re struggling to remember something, but when you forget it once you’re unlikely to ever forget it again. Learning vocabulary can feel like a massive challenge, but remember that you can’t become fluent overnight. So don’t be too hard on yourself, and enjoy experimenting with different methods until you find one that makes learning vocabulary a breeze.

## What’s a Tandem Language Level?

A level shows your partner how far along you are on your language journey, and what your next goal is likely to be. You can choose from three levels on Tandem:

__Beginner:__

This is for members who are making their first steps in learning a language. You might not know any words at all; or perhaps you just know some basics, such as how to introduce yourself or ask for directions. It’s probably a bit too early for you to have an effective language exchange in a video chat, so we advise you to communicate with your partners with text and audio messages to make progress, using the help of our tools like automatic translations. 

__Intermediate:__

This is for members who already have some basic language skills and can speak with some confidence on easier topics. You can go shopping, make plans with others, discuss your travels and describe the plot of your favorite movie, for example. The research of our friends at the Tandem Fundazioa showed that at this stage you are ready for an effective language exchange in a video chat. A good indicator is that you are able to talk about things that happened in the past, for example, using the “perfect tense” in many languages (in English: “I have seen...”).

__Advanced:__

This is for members who are very confident in their speaking skills. You can have a spontaneous and fluent conversation, understand the news and use the language effectively for work and studies.

We have designed our Tandem Language Levels to correspond with levels in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL), an internationally recognized system for learning languages. 

On Tandem: Beginner = A1/A2, Intermediate = B1 and Advanced = B2+.

## What is the CEFRL?

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages divides language learners into three broad groups - A, B & C. Here’s a table that shows in detail what the levels mean in the CEFRL:

These levels are designed to be used with European languages - Tandem members come from all around the world and are learning more than 150 different languages, many non-European. For a start, internships are a great opportunity to build up your work experience, live in a different country and meet new people. The connections you make while interning might also be useful for your future career, so make it count! Internships are also a chance for you to show off all your amazing skills and learn some new ones at the same time. But how do you get an internship? We’ve listed a few things to help you turn your internship dream into a reality! 🙂

## Choose a country

Choosing a country for your internship abroad is an important first step. The most popular destinations are Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Singapore - since many companies in these countries offer internships. Of course, your language skills play a role in this decision, so make sure you’re realistic about the countries you’re able to undertake an internship in. Think about the culture of the country too. Are you looking to travel somewhere with a culture similar to your own, or somewhere entirely different? These are the type of questions you should ask yourself before deciding where to start the search.

## Choose a company

With millions of companies to choose from, deciding where you’d like to do your internship is tricky! The choice depends on your field of interest, whether you’d prefer a larger or a smaller company, your language skills, goals and many more aspects. Try to figure out what exactly you want to get out of the experience. Do you want to gain more experience or simply land yourself a permanent position? Is it important for you to be closely mentored by someone with years of experience or would you to prefer to have more ownership and freedom over tasks?

## Prepare your documents

Papers, please! Bureaucracy is never fun, but each company will require you to fill in some necessary documents. So, wherever possible, check which documents you’ll need before applying - often they take a long time to reach you! If you’re studying at a university, you might need an official certificate confirming you’re a student. Resumés, cover letters, and references should be translated into English or the local language of the company.

## Prepare for the interview

This is perhaps the most important step in the process. You can have all the documents, experience and languages skills required, but if you don’t spend time researching the company, you’ll really decrease your chances of landing a great internship abroad.

Start by reading about the company, its offering, history, achievements, and plans for the future. Next, think about what you can bring to the company and how you can benefit them. This is a perfect way to impress the interviewer and show them you’ve done your homework! As well as preparing answers to the standard interview questions, it’s a good idea to make a list of words and phrases that might be useful during the interview.

## Don't forget about visas

You won’t get far without this one! If you’re traveling to certain countries for your internship, you may be required to get a visa. Beware, applications for visas can take some time, so prepare all the documents in advance. If you’re not sure whether you need a visa or not, do some research online or check with the agency who is organizing your internship.

So, you’ve signed up (yay!), [set up your profile](https://www.tandem.net/creating-perfect-profile-tandem) and are feeling super motivated to get your language learning journey underway, but what’s next? The Tandem community is here to support you all the way, so here are our top tips on how to get started. Keep them in mind and you’ll be a language exchange pro in no time. 

### Complete your Learning Preferences 

One of the keys to a successful language exchange is finding a Tandem partner with similar goals. On your profile, you’ll find a section called “Learning Preferences,” which allows you to share details about your preferred style of learning, your weekly time commitment, and how you’d like your mistakes to be corrected. Fill in your preferences and take note of your Tandem partner’s, so you can practice languages in a way that suits both of you. 

### Find a like-minded language exchange partner

On the Community stream, you’ll find a whole bunch of potential partners who are native in the language you want to learn and are looking for someone like you to help them with their target language. Take a closer look at each member’s topic so that you can find someone with similar interests. 

If you want to further refine the list of members, tap the filter icon next to the search bar on the Community stream and change your filter settings as you wish!	

### Send your first message 

It can be pretty daunting to send your first message on Tandem. Just remember that everyone is on Tandem to improve their language skills, just like you. Try sending more than a simple “Hi” to your Tandem partner so that they know you’re really serious about starting a language exchange with them. If you’re stuck for ideas, we’ve got you covered with these handy [conversation starters](https://www.tandem.net/conversation-starters-language-learners). 

### Structure your language exchange 

Once you’re in the flow of your language exchange, it’s a good time to discuss how you’re going to format your conversations with your Tandem partner. Learning a foreign language requires frequency and regularity. It’s better to study several times a week for 30 minutes, than once a week for 2 hours. 

If you’re having an audio call, set a goal of 5 minutes in each language. Talk in your target language for 5 minutes while your partner listens and then swap. Help each other out and [correct their mistakes](https://www.tandem.net/how-to-correct-mistakes-en) if they slip up.

### Start a video chat

Now you’re ready for your first Tandem [video chat](https://www.tandem.net/first-video-language-exchange). You’ll see the best results with video chat as it allows you to listen to the language and use body language to express yourself. That’s pronunciation and listening practice all rolled into one! Remember to swap languages during the call don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Everyone’s in the same boat.

It’s pretty much winter here in the Northern Hemisphere and we’re all gearing up for a few months of hot tea and cozy evenings by the fire. However, for some of you lucky ones, it’s time to start preparing for your winter vacation! Whether you’re visiting the infamous [Christmas markets in Germany](https://www.tandem.net/15-german-christmas-market-words), spending a long weekend in Stockholm or getting your ski on in Whistler, Tandem is here to share some top tips for your next winter vacation.

## 1. Learn the basics in the language

Before you jet off on your winter vacation, try and learn the translation of the following phrases:

Jefferson has been using Tandem for two years and has over 300 references and 1800 followers. Jefferson found out about Tandem through an online article recommending mobile apps to help you learn foreign languages. 

His first conversation was with a native [Chinese speaker](https://www.tandem.net/tandem-tips-learning-chinese-language-exchange/), which was an exciting experience for English native speaker Jefferson. They found their first video chat a little nerve-wracking, as neither of them had done anything like that before. But after they had overcome the initial nerves, they had a great video chat. Here are his top tips for being a great language exchange partner!

## Tip #1: Turn on that camera

Jefferson highly recommends using [video for language exchange](https://www.tandem.net/first-video-language-exchange/): “For those who really want to learn and practice a language, video chat is the best option in my opinion” he explains. “You can talk freely without using any support such as language translators and you can have eye-to-eye contact with your partner which is also good for your shyness”. So that just goes to show - even if you are feeling nervous, a video chat could be just the ticket.

## Tip #2: Make the most of the filters

For anyone new to Tandem, Jefferson also has some great advice about how to find new friends. “The filters are really important for Tandem to be able to select the best language partners for you”, he says. These filters can help you find suitable partners by allowing you to show your language requirements, which will ultimately result in you being shown the best possible matches for those needs.

## Tip #3: Just say hi!

Once you have been shown those potential language partner matches, Jefferson says, “don’t be afraid to just say hi!”. There’s no pressure to come up with something creative to [start the conversation](https://www.tandem.net/conversation-starters-language-learners/), although that might help you have a more engaging language exchange. Jefferson finds that the best way to keep conversations with a Tandem Partner interesting is “to try to talk about subjects and topics that you both find cool, such as food, travel or culture. And if you don’t know what to speak about, ask your partner what he or she would like to talk about. If you keep trying, you’ll eventually find a topic you both like”. 

Having a look at your Tandem partner’s profile is also a really handy way to see what kinds of things they are interested in. “When people fill their profiles, a lot of them give excellent tips about what they want to talk about,” Jefferson says, “so try to focus on that as a starting point when thinking about what to say to someone”.

## Tip #4: Schedule your Tandems

Another great tip for users to become better language partners is to try scheduling conversations with your Tandem Partner. “By making a regular time to meet online and practice together, you will improve together”, Jefferson says. He advises you not to worry about making mistakes - it’s a natural part of learning a language. “Always remember that both of you are on Tandem to learn from each other and practice languages,” he notes. “Making mistakes is a big part of the language learning process, so don’t worry about it!”

## Tip #5: Don't give up!

What about the best way to make conversations last beyond the introductory stage? “Just don’t give up speaking to your partner”, Jefferson asserts. “If you message your partner regularly, the chances are you and your partner will start to get used to each other and feel comfortable to talk about even more topics”. This in turn allows for an even more exciting language exchange, the chance to have amazing practice and cover some new vocabulary - a win-win situation all round!

## Get to know your partner first

Use Tandem to talk to your partner extensively and find out beforehand that you have things in common. Also use this time to look out for any inconsistencies in what they are telling you. Does your new partner’s story make sense? Do they have a good reason for being on the app? Are their requests strange? Remember that Tandem is a language learning platform, so anyone who is only interested in something else, particularly dating, are probably not the kinds of people you should be meeting for a face-to-face language exchange.

## ALWAYS video chat beforehand

This might seem obvious, but make sure that you have actually spoken to your partner on Tandem via [video](https://www.tandem.net/first-video-language-exchange/) at least a few times before you meet them face-to-face. Instant messaging is great, but often people can be quite different when you meet them in person. You need to see and hear your partner to get a good feeling for how successful the language exchange will be!

## Discuss your expectations

This goes for all language exchanges! It is important to work out early on what your partner wants to get from the language exchange, and share your own goals too. This is especially important when you are of different language levels, or if you are using a third mutually understood language to communicate. This way you can set out the boundaries and goals before you even meet, and can spend all of your precious face-to-face time enjoying the language exchange.

## Meet during the day

Day time is the best for language exchange - remember, you are both studying and are there to learn. A daytime meeting will keep things relatively businesslike and professional! We’d advise avoiding alcohol on your first meeting. While a glass of wine or bottle of beer might be tempting to get the conversation flowing, it’s wise to be fully on the ball.

## Pick a suitable location

You want to meet somewhere that is easy for both of you to get to. It should also be a neutral, public place with good lighting, preferably in a lively and busy part of town. You’ll be talking lots, so ideally find somewhere relatively quiet with refreshments - a café or ice cream parlour would work well. Avoid dark bars and nightclubs… they aren’t ideal locations for a language exchange ;)

## Decide on time limit beforehand

It can be a bit exhausting to talk to someone new face to face even when you’ve been chatting for hours on Tandem, so don’t overestimate how long you’ll want to chat the first time. An hour, with half an hour for each language, should be enough, then once you know each other better you’ll feel comfortable chatting for much longer periods.

## Tell your friends where you are

As you should do whenever you meet someone for the first time, it is a good idea to let your friends or family know where you are going and who you are meeting. [Language exchange](https://www.tandem.net/language-exchange) is all about getting speaking practice with interesting people and helping each other learn. The trick is to find a partner that a) you have something in common with and b) matches your language goals. Tandem partners don’t have to be native speakers of the language you want to learn, but they often are. The [Tandem app](https://go.tandem.net/LZFP) gives you the option to choose whether you would like to speak only with native speakers of the language you are learning, or also with people who can speak the language fluently but are not native speakers. That’s why we ask you to list both your “native” and “spoken” languages when you join Tandem.

It’s an important distinction. The true meaning of [“native speaker”](https://www.tandem.net/international-mother-language-day-native/) is often debated, but it’s generally accepted to mean someone who learnt the language as a small child in a _natural_ setting, usually through hearing their parents speak. That means a child growing up in a bilingual or even multilingual household could have several “native” languages. 

Non-native speakers learn the language as older children or adults. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean they speak the language any less accurately than a native speaker. It is often said that the best way to learn is with a native speaker, and there’s no denying that chatting with native speakers has great advantages. But so does speaking with fluent speakers who aren’t native!

Knowing your language goals can help you decide on what kind of partner to look for. It’s important to understand the different benefits of native speakers vs those who have learnt the language later in life. Here are a few of the most important goals that will be best achieved with the help of native speakers:

## You want to learn how to use vocab and phrases naturally.

Native speakers of a language have a rich vocabulary of idioms and slang, and can show you the best time to use certain words and phrases depending on the context.

## You want to emulate an authentic accent and pronunciation.

Want to learn the perfect ‘Hochdeutsch’ accent, or find out the difference in pronunciation of tricky English heteronyms? Then speaking with a native speaker is the best way to do that. By listening to a native speaking Tandem partner during a [video language exchange](https://www.tandem.net/first-video-language-exchange/), you can become familiar with their pronunciation. They can even send you some audio recordings of them speaking so that you can practice by yourself! Make sure to offer to help them with their pronunciation too, if they want it.

## You want to learn about culture and everyday life in the country your language partner comes from.

The internet is full of useful information about culture and life in foreign countries, but the best way to get an insight into someone else’s culture is to ask them about it yourself. You and your Tandem partner can exchange photos of your everyday foods, clothes and activities in your respective countries and cultures, and discuss the differences and similarities in both of your languages. That’s way more fun than just reading about the culture of a country on the web, right?

## You want to be sure that everything you hear is correct.

Native speakers are a very reliable authority on their own language - they have been immersed in this language since birth! Though remember that your partner will speak the language as they learnt it as a child. This means that they will speak the version of the language that is “correct” wherever they grew up, which might be slightly different from the “correct” version you might read in a grammar textbook. So you might have to resign yourself to learning Parisian style French if you’re talking to a born-and-raised Parisian. 

If these goals correspond with your language needs, then it’s likely that you’ll want to practice with a native speaker to get perfect. However, particularly for beginner or intermediate learners, there are other goals that **non-native speakers** can help you achieve. Here are a few of them:

## You want to gain confidence.

While it’s great to speak with people who are fluent in the language you are learning, it may be a bit daunting unless you are also of a very high level. When you speak with a non-native speaker, there is so much less pressure. You are in a safe environment where you can both make mistakes and learn together.

## You want to understand the grammar from a learner perspective.

Most native speakers of a language have never stopped to think why you have to use the simple present and not the present progressive in that sentence because it just seems obvious to them. They have used it naturally their whole lives and have never had to explain it before. Meanwhile, non-native speakers who are very advanced in a foreign language have had to study the grammar from scratch, just like you. They are the best people to answer your ‘But why…?’ questions in a clear and simple way.

## You want a partner who understands your struggle.

Advanced non-native speakers have stumbled across the common problems or tricky bits in the language already, so they are usually sympathetic to problems you may be having. They may even be able to give you some handy tips on how to overcome these problems, or share with you the methods they used to get around them. And best of all - they are living proof that these problems can be overcome! 

So, can you learn a language as quickly with someone who does not have the language as a mother tongue, even if they’re really good? The honest answer is: yes, you can. But it depends on what you’re looking for in your speaking partner. All in all, the most important thing really is to just get speaking, whatever way you can! ## What is International Women’s Day? 

International Women’s Day always takes place on March 8th and is a global day celebrating the [achievements of women](https://www.tandem.net/awesome-female-polyglots/) in society, politics and culture. The day was first created as a rallying point for women and men alike to campaign for women’s rights - more than one million women and men attended the first International Women’s Day rallies in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland in 1911. The Suffragettes led the International Women’s Day celebrations in the UK in the same year. Today, International Women’s Day is an opportunity to come together and promote gender parity, while taking the time to celebrate the achievements of women throughout history. And that’s exactly what we’re doing here.

**1. Katie Harris** 

Harris is a native English speaking polyglot currently based in Milan, who runs the exciting online community [Joy Of Languages](http://joyoflanguages.com/). The site gives hints and tips on language learning motivation and Katie blogs regularly about her experiences to spur her readers on to achieve their language goals too. What is most amazing about Katie’s story, though, is that she could not speak any foreign languages until the age of 22! Which makes us think that there’s hope yet for us all.

Born in New York City, Shahidah moved to Germany as a teenager and as a result speaks German and English fluently, as well as French and Spanish. She created the website [Black Girls Learn Languages](http://www.blackgirlslearnlanguages.co/) to be an online resource for female language learners from the African diaspora. Check it out for informative blog entries on language, travel and other issues as well as interesting pages on notable polyglots throughout history and today. Oh, and she’s also known as the “Language Bae”, which is pretty cool.

**3. Bridget Barbara**  

Another native of New York City, Bridget posts [short fun videos](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqILnGzWyjqnPFqS2e1yVWQ) about her experiences learning Russian and her quest to become fluent in the language. Her enthusiasm and passion for the language is clear in all her videos, some of which are filmed on her visits to Russia, and others on life in New York and the USA in the Russian language. A must watch for anyone intrigued by the incredible Russian language (or if you’re keen on finding out more about NYC)!

**4. Lina Vasquez** 

Lina was brought up multilingual, globetrotting between Latvia and Australia as a child, so it’s no surprise that she had a strong interest in language learning from a very early age. This is reflected in her blog and vlog, [the Busy Linguist](https://thebusylinguist.com/), where she gives language lessons and posts motivational videos and articles to get everyone motivated. And she speaks 8 languages - which is badass.


**5. Angel Huang** 

Hailing originally from China, Angel is now based in Sweden and runs the fabulous free blog [Mandarin HQ](https://mandarinhq.com/). The site, which aims to make it easier for everyone to learn and speak Mandarin, contains entertaining videos to accompany the blog text, so that users can also listen to and practice their Mandarin pronunciation. It’s the perfect resource for Mandarin beginners and more advanced learners alike.

**11. Shanna - Hangukdrama** 

This blog is an essential read for anyone interested in learning Asian languages. Shanna is a native speaker of English and Mandarin, and has documented her self-taught journey to fluency in Korean and Japanese through her [lively and entertaining blog](http://www.hangukdrama.com/). Her website is full of useful resources and tips to help learners with their language journey, highlighting her own personal experiences along the way.

12 Amazing Female Language Bloggers You Should Follow

Reading is an amazing way to improve your language skills. By doing lots of reading, you’re exposing yourself to [new vocabulary](https://www.tandem.net/tips-remember-new-vocabulary/) and structures in a totally natural way, which helps you gain a better understanding of how the language really works. And when done alongside a lot of speaking practice, you’ll notice how quickly you start to improve! Some important things to note when you’re reading in a foreign language:

*   **You won’t understand everything.** Just try and understand as much as you can from context, and look up any key words in a dictionary.
*   **Write down new words and phrases.** If you look something up, write it down!
*   **Make notes.** You can also improve your writing skills and ensure you don’t forget things.
*   **Enjoy it!** If you read something you enjoy, it won’t feel like work :)

So what should you read, if you want to improve your skills really quickly? The classic options - reading novels or newspapers - are of course all excellent practice. But they are also pretty difficult for new learners. Luckily, the internet provides an amazing range of reading resources at all different levels. If you’re stuck for ideas, here are some great options for getting started on reading in a foreign language!

### 1. Comic books

Rather than reading novels, which can be a bit overwhelming for beginner learners, track down some interesting comic books or graphic novels. You’ll also have the benefit of being introduced to some great conversational phrases and vocabulary, as much of the text in comic books is dialogue between characters. Some larger book stores will sell comic books in languages like English, Japanese or Korean, but looking on Ebay or Amazon can uncover second-hand treasures in other languages too.

### 2. Subtitles

Here’s a novel idea. Instead of having subtitles in your own language when watching a foreign movie, why not have them in the language you are trying to learn? You’ll be able to understand a lot from the context and it’s a good way to get used to reading in a new language.

### 3. Longer chats

Ask your [Tandem partner](https://www.tandem.net/partner) to write in a bit of length on a certain topic, and write them a longer message in return. It will still be a relatively short thing to read, but if it’s coming from a friend, you’re likely to find it interesting! Here are a few ideas of things to write about:

*   Describe something strange/funny that happened to you recently

*   Describe the worst film you have ever seen


### 4. Write a diary

Writing a diary is often mooted as a great way to improve your writing skills, but did you know it also can be a great help to your reading? Looking over the previous day’s entry will ensure you remember any new vocabulary or phrases. Best of all, you’ll become an ace editor, as you’ll start to notice and correct any mistakes that you didn’t spot the night before.

### 5. Forums and microblogging

Enjoy scrolling through Reddit, Tumblr or Twitter in your native language? There are sure to be plenty of subreddits or tags in your target language too. Think of a topic that you’re interested in and search it - you’ll be surprised how many cool things there will be to read about and practice your language skills at the same time. Bear in mind, though, that the forums that are most popular in your native language may be less popular in your target language. Spend some time researching which sites are most popular with people like you who speak your target language - your Tandem partner is a great person to ask for advice.

### 6. Wikipedia

If you’re the kind of person who can find themselves stuck in a Wikihole for hours, try switching to your target language. Not only will you be getting some advanced reading practice, but you are also likely to learn something different, as different language versions usually have quite a few differences in the text too. Smart hack: Wikipedia actually has a “simple English” language setting for many articles as well as a version in normal English.

### 7. Recipes

Recipes are a simple yet effective way to get some short reading practice in. The internet means you can be searching for recipes in your target language in seconds! Make sure you do some research about which cooking websites are the most reputable before you get started, though. The reading is all well and good, but ultimately you do want something nice to eat at the end of it!

### 8. Blogs

Blogs are a really accessible way of getting into reading in a foreign language. The informal, chatty writing style that [bloggers](https://www.tandem.net/language-bloggers-international-womens-day) use is a great source of short reading material. And no, you don’t need to read one that is about learning a language (though there are some great language blogs out there if you need some tips!) Rather, find some that focus on your favorite hobby or pastime. Love cooking? Football? Make up? A quick search in your target language should bring up some bloggers writing about something that actually interests you.

Do you ever worry about having an accent when you speak a foreign language? We’ve all been there. That fear of having a strong accent can put people off speaking a language full stop! 

When we learn foreign languages as an adult, the phonetic patterns of our native language are so deeply entrenched that it’s hard even to recognise them… let alone change them naturally depending on what language we are speaking. That’s why we struggle to replace familiar sounds with the ones for the language we are learning. 

Even after learning the correct pronunciation, there will be some deeply embedded patterns in our speech that betray us as non-native speakers. Thus, we end up stuck with an accent that just won’t shift. We’re faced with thousands of blogs, vlogs, tutors, [podcasts](https://www.tandem.net/top-free-podcasts-language-learners), classes, videos, textbooks that promise to get us sounding like a native speaker. And to a certain extent, they have a point. Studying the vocal patterns and pronunciation of native speakers is very useful if you want to communicate clearly with everyone in your target language. No-one will understand you if you don’t have clear pronunciation, and you wouldn’t want all your hard work to go to waste. Yet having an accent is never something to be ashamed of or embarrassed by. Rather, it is something we can all take pride in! Here are just a few reasons why an accent is a badge you should wear with pride: 

### It’s testament to your hard work

When people hear a foreign accent, it should be respected as evidence of a lot of hard work. You’re learning another accent from scratch as an adult, and that is no small feat at all! 

### It indicates your cultural heritage

An accent is part of your personal history and where you’ve come from. For that reason alone, it is something that many people consider integral to the fabric of their own identity.

### It means you're pretty smart

Learning a language doesn't just take hard work - it also takes a lot of brain power.

The easiest way to speak any language is by making friends. How do you make friends? By finding things in common and starting a conversation! When considering how to start a conversation, the most important thing is to avoid “yes” or “no” questions - e.g. “Do you like cheese?” Once you find out if they like cheese or not, that could be the end of the conversation! Instead, you should be asking something that will start a discussion - e.g. “Which cheeses do you prefer?” or “Which country has the best cheese?” It’s a good idea to follow up these questions with a “Why” to ensure you get the conversation flowing quickly. You should also avoid making conversation starters too personal or inappropriate - remember this is the first impression you’ll give to a potential friend, so make it a good one!

No doubt you’ve already discussed with your partner where they come from, but people like to talk about the past, and this is a great way to lead into that. Ask them to describe their childhood home or school, the town in which they lived, and compare with your own experiences. You’ll be surprised by the differences - and what you have in common!

### 2. "What's your dream job?"

It’s normal to ask your [language exchange partner](https://www.tandem.net/partner) about their job. But a dream job is often a much more interesting discussion point. It combines hopes and fears with a bit of imagination. It can also lead to an interesting discussion about values and what is really important when it comes to your working life.

You can learn a lot about a person from the time of year they like the most! The nice thing about discussing seasons is that there are plenty of pros and cons of each to talk through. Think about all the things you like to eat, drink and do during the different seasons. You may have some special events and festivals in your country at certain times of year that you can talk about.

A shared sense of humor is something integral to many friendships. So, sussing out what they find funny early on is a good way to judge if you’ll work well together as language exchange partners! Rather than making an unexpected joke that falls on deaf ears, ask them what they usually find hilarious. Perhaps you like the same comedy shows, or have a penchant for slapstick humor. You may even end up getting a unique insight into how humor works in a different culture!

### 5. "What do you think of this song?"

Open up Spotify or YouTube and share your favorite (or least favorite) song… and wait for the reaction! Music brings people together and it’s always interesting to get an insight into what’s popular (or unpopular) in another culture. Most people love to rant and rave about the songs they love and hate. You can always go for an iconic song from your country that they might not have heard before. 

### 6. "What’s the weirdest thing about your language?"

When we learn to speak our first language as small children, we aren’t really paying attention to the ins and outs of how the language actually works. That’s why it’s nice to see your native language in a new way as you teach it to your partner. Everyone likes to talk about the strange things they have observed in their own language - why not share something weird from your language too? It could be a strange idiom, grammar rule or adjective that makes your language unique!

### 7. "If you could be an animal, what would you be, and why?"

Even if your language partner is not an animal lover, asking which animal they most identify with is bound to get the conversation flowing. Usually there is a fascinating reason behind their animal choice, and will tell you a lot about what your language partner considers to be important. You might find out that your chosen animal has different symbolism in your partner’s country, or vice versa…
