Meet Mao, our first Tandem Ambassador!

Mao comes from Taiwan, and has lived in Japan, Singapore, as well as Korea. He speaks Japanese, Korean, Chinese and English fluently, and language meetups are his go-to social activity when starting in a new place which is also why he loves to host his own language exchanges, in Tainan, and soon in Tokyo. Another reason to host language exchange is to meet like minded people like him, and to have an international circle!

Other than hosting meetups, Mao also often uses Tandem for making friends outside his home country. He explained how in Korea, due to COVID-19, he could not make many friends since studies were online. Through Tandem, he met someone from Korea who also spoke Japanese, and they would cook traditional food of their country for each other while practicing their languages. It was an amazing cultural exchange, even with the restrictions at the time.

When Mao organizes his meetups, he prefers to have them in a cafe, as it is easier to actually practice languages and hear each other. He has made language exchange an amazing experience in Tainan, which has increased the number of attendees by 70% !
